Clothes Making Fundamentals – Sunday 14th December 10.30am-3.30pm

$160.00

Want to sew your own clothes using paper patterns, but not sure where to start? Want to know how to do a gather, a facing or a dart while also learning how to read a sewing pattern? Then this is the class for you!

In this five-hour workshop you will learn to:

  • Read the information about style, sizing, and fabric found on the pattern envelope.
  • Take your measurements and choose the size that’s right for you.
  • Understand the various components of the instruction sheet and the pattern pieces (layout, symbols, measurements).
  • Compile and trace home-printed and tissue patterns in preparation for cutting.
  • Layout the pattern on your fabric correctly with minimal waste before pinning and cutting.
  • Transfer markings and prepare the cut pieces for sewing.
  • Build on your basic sewing machine skills.
  • Learn terminology commonly found in sewing pattern instructions.
  • Practise essential techniques such as stay-stitching, seam finishing, understitching, clipping and trimming, edge and top stitching, hemming, buttonholes and more!
  • Understand which stitches and presser feet to use for various techniques.
  • Make samples of each technique and learn when and how they are used in garment construction.
  • Gain know-how that will make sewing patterns easier to follow.

Once you’ve learned how to use paper patterns and how to do these essential sewing techniques, it will make it much easier for you to sew your own clothes at home.

At the end of the class, you can take home your customised pattern, having made an excellent start – ready for you to complete at home with all the guidance to keep going!
