Social Hand Sewing at Maker’s Window Friday 7th August 6pm – 8.30pm
You don’t have to know how to use a sewing machine to make and repair textiles. After all, until the first Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century all clothing was sewn by hand. In this hand sewing and mending workshop you will learn the basic hand stitching techniques required to produce and mend garments and textiles.
We will cover the sewing techniques you need to start creating and mending your own clothes by hand. After some needle and thread basics, you will learn three easy, hand sewn stitches – running stitch, backstitch and hemming. We will also teach you simple decorative stitching techniques.
Working with these stitches, you will learn how to create strong and neat French seams, and take up a hem. You will take home a small hand sewn soft case with optional ‘sashiko stich’ embellishment.
In collaboration with Maker’s Window, an evolving community art space in Barkly St, Footscray, we are pleased to offer monthly, low-cost, social hand sewing evenings.
Maker’s Window is creating a welcoming and inclusive art-making space that encourages a healthier and more connected community. They offer a range of workshops and events to foster a sense of community engagement and belonging.
In this textile workshop, with the support of facilitator Gaye Naismith, you will learn hand sewing stitches and decorative mending techniques that you can use to
-sew and repair loved clothes and other textiles
– create small stitched works from fabric remnants and textiles you already own that hold meaning or memories for you.
These workshops are suitable for both absolute beginners and more experienced sewers who fancy a relaxing evening of social hand sewing with a group of friendly people. You can join us at any time but bookings are essential.
Learning how to wrangle a needle and thread is a valuable life skill that can save you money, save your clothes and reduce your impact on the environment! Our workshops also allow you to explore the creative possibilities of hand sewing.
