Four Week Course 6.15 – 9pm Friday evenings
Learn techniques specific to sewing a wide range of stretch fabrics to make street wear, active wear and under wear!
This 11 hour course over four weeks will cover specialised techniques for sewing garments with stretch fabric using both a standard sewing machine and an overlocker. We will make four garments using both cotton stretch fabrics such as jersey, interlock, fleece and rib and synthetic knits like lycra and tricot.
Weeks One and Two
Sewing stretch on a sewing machine. You don’t need an overlocker to sew stretch. We’ll show you how using basic machine stitches.
Projects: Simple extended shoulder tee and a pair of knickers.
Weeks Three and Four.
Sewing stretch using an overlocker. Take a step up and sew stretch like a pro!
Projects: Long sleeve ‘sloppy joe’ top and a pair of leggings.
Class Level: Beyond Basics. Participants should have some experience
-operating a sewing machine to sew or finish simple items. (Overlocker experience preferred but not necessary)
-laying out and cutting a simple sewing pattern.
If you need to skill up before you come, book one or more of our ‘Basics’ workshops. We offer Sewing Machine Basics, Sewing Pattern Basics and Overlocker Basics workshops.
Your Teacher: Renowned costumier Zoe Felice. Zoe is an expert in sewing costumes and lingerie using an array of stretch fabrics and nifty techniques. She also takes Beginners, Beyond Basics and Overlocker Basics Courses. See some of Zoe’s creations here.
We will provide: Patterns for each project for in-class use, fabrics for practice, scissors, pins, snacks, handout notes and lots of very useful tips and tricks! Some overlockers and sewing machines will be available for use (please let us know if you wish to use one of our machines.
Bring along: Your own sewing machine and overlocker if you can. Fabrics for the projects. Your teacher will advise on quantities and types before course commencement.
Our small class numbers (maximum 6 students) allow your teacher to give each student lots of personalised attention. A minimum of four students is required for the class to go ahead.
