From Pattern Making to Completed Garment: Unisex Jacket 22nd Feb & 1st March
Design and make a casual unisex jacket over two full days, in this ‘From Pattern Making to Completed Garment’ collaboration with our friends and neighbours at THE PATTERN MAKING CLASS
ThIs workshop is open to budding sewists and designers of all skill levels and offers both an introduction to both pattern making and to garment construction. You will need to know the basics of using a sewing machine.
Day One — 22nd February 9.30am – 3pm: Introduction to Pattern Making at The Pattern Making Class
You will custom draft a jacket pattern perfectly fitted to your size from a pattern block.
Learn the basic principles of flat pattern making, understand terminology and equipment use.

Where: The Pattern Making Class studio. Unit 44 / 91 Morland Street, Footscray (Dockland Cotton Mills)
Day Two — 1st March 10am – 4.30pm: Introduction to Garment Construction at The Gaye Abandon School of Sewing and Upcycling
– Use your self-drafted sewing pattern to create a one-off garment.
– Understand how to correctly lay and cut out your fabric, and prepare your jacket for sewing.
– Construct and finish your garment so it looks like a bought one, learning essential sewing techniques along the way.
– Create and finish seams, make patch pockets, attach sleeves ‘on the flat’, attach front band/collar, make hems and cuffs, press.
Where: At our bright, airy and spacious sewing school less than a kilometre away from the Pattern Making Class at Level 1, 9/131 Hyde St, Footscray
We will provide: Sewing machines, overlockers and all other equipment. Light lunch, tea, coffee and bikkies.
Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would like to learn on that (we have plenty if you don’t own one). A sewing kit and fabric scissors if you have them. Fabric and matching thread. Your teacher will be in touch with more details about fabric recommendations, quantity and other required materials closer to the date of the workshop.
Getting here: We are located in the Hyde Business Park 131 Hyde St, close to Yarraville Gardens.
Public Transport and Parking:
6 minutes walk (550 metres) from Seddon Station or 10 mins walk from Footscray Station straight up Hyde St.
The 409 bus runs up Hyde St between Yarraville and Highpoint Shopping Centre (via Footscray) stops almost outside.
There is street parking in Hyde St and customer parking behind the complex.
