Beyond Basics Sewing Short Course 4 weeks
A four week (10 hour) short course ideal for budding sewists who can already confidently use a sewing machine to sew simple items. Gain the confidence and know-how to begin sewing your own wardrobe!  Choose your own ‘easy’ level pattern that you can complete over the 4 weeks.

This short course is focussed on  learning to use commercial sewing patterns to make simple garments. 
In the first week we will take you through the fundamentals of using sewing pattens and how to correctly cut out your pattern from your fabric.
In the following weeks you will construct your garment, following the steps detailed on the pattern instruction sheets. You will learn essential garment making techniques along the way.

Skill level: Suitable for students who can use a sewing machine to make simple items, and out of practice sewists who want to brush up their skills or learn more formally. Men are most welcome to attend!
You may have completed one of our Learn to Sew One Day Workshops , Beginner’s Courses or similar.   

We will provide: Sewing machines and all other equipment, beverages, handout notes and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would prefer to learn on that instead, and your sewing kit if you have one. A beginner’s level sewing pattern you can complete within the four weeks and fabric. Your teacher can advise you on pattern and fabric choices before the course commences.

Where: The Gaye Abandon Workroom, 122 Buckley St, Footscray.

When: Friday evenings 6.30 – 9

Sewing classes focusing on garment construction open to students of all levels. Bring a sewing pattern of your choice to work on under our expert guidance and enjoy a relaxed morning of dedicated sewing time!

PLEASE NOTE: All students are required to be fully vaccinated to attend this course. Class numbers will be limited to 6 to meet density requirements.
If your course booking is affected by a lockdown we will reschedule your affected classes and offer additional make-up classes. You may also request a credit or full refund for classes missed due to Covid 19 restrictions imposed by the Victorian Government.

Skill Level:  Open to all levels from beginners (with basic sewing machine skills) who want to learn to sew clothing, to experienced sewists who would like support tackling more difficult projects. At minimum students will have completed one of our Sewing Machine Basics workshops or similar.  If you do not have basic sewing machine skills or experience,  you may book a  private lesson with us to cover machine basics as a prerequisite to attending this course.

Men are encouraged to join our friendly group! Open to adults and young adults (minimum age 15yo).

Course Content: This course focuses on learning to use a commercial sewing pattern to make a garment.  The dressmaking techniques you develop will give you confidence to sew your own clothes independently into the future!

We can offer suggestions for good sewing patterns for your skill level if you are unsure about what to make. If you want to complete your garment within the 4 weeks of the course we suggest choosing something fairly simple with a few challenges. 10hrs (inc. cutting out) is not much time to sew something!

About your Teacher: This class is taught by costumier and regular Gaye Abandon teacher Zoe FeliceZoe is a NIDA-trained costume maker/designer 

Where:  The Gaye Abandon School of Sewing and Upcycling, Level 1, 9/131 Hyde St, Footscray.

When: Wednesday mornings 10am – 12.30pm from November 10th
10th, 17th, 24th, DECEMBER1st

We will provide: Sewing machines if required. A lovely bright, spacious studio to sew in. Beverages, friendly people, a fabulous supportive teacher and lots of very practical techniques to help you complete your chosen project!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine (if you prefer) and sewing kit  (pins, scissors etc). You will need to purchase fabric and a pattern, along with matching threads and other notions to finish your garments. Your sewing kit if you have one (at minimum a box of pins). If not, we have equipment you may use. We also sell Sewing Starter Packs and other basic sewing equipment.

Getting here:  We are located in the Hyde Business Park, 131 Hyde St, Footscray, close to Yarraville Gardens.
Public Transport: We are 6 minutes walk (550 metres) from Seddon Station or 10 mins walk from Footscray Station straight up Hyde St.The 409 bus runs up Hyde St between Yarraville and Highpoint Shopping Centre (via Footscray) There are stops very close to us. There is street parking in Hyde St and customer parking behind the complex in Cowper St. See our Contact Page for a map.
