Sew Your Own Gifts: Dopp Kit or Make-Up Purse

You don’t have to know how to use a sewing machine to make and repair textiles. After all, until the first Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century all clothing was sewn by hand. In this hand sewing and mending workshop you will learn the basic hand stitching techniques required to produce and mend garments and textiles.

We will cover the sewing techniques you need to start creating and mending your own clothes by hand. After some needle and thread basics, you will learn three easy, hand sewn stitches – running stitch, backstitch and hemming. We will also teach you simple decorative stitching techniques.

Working with these stitches, you will learn how to create strong and neat French seams, and take up a hem. You will take home a small hand sewn soft case with optional ‘sashiko stich’ embellishment.

Learn how to insert a zip, add lining and make boxed corners to create a pouch perfect for stashing personal items. Impress your friends and family with the professional looking results!

Skill level: Absolute beginner. No experience necessary but  basic sewing machine skills — (ability to thread a machine and sew straight stitch) is useful). If you don’t have these skills we will give you a very quick rundown. We welcome and include men and non-binary folk!

We will provide: Sewing machines and all equipment (BYO if you prefer). A toiletries bag kit with a range of gorgeous fabric for you to choose from, zips, threads and instructions. Access to an online instructional video so you can sew more at home for family and friends!
