Loved Clothes Last! – Darning 4th September
You don’t have to know how to use a sewing machine to make and repair textiles. After all, until the first Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century all clothing was sewn by hand. In this hand sewing and mending workshop you will learn the basic hand stitching techniques required to produce and mend garments and textiles.
We will cover the sewing techniques you need to start creating and mending your own clothes by hand. After some needle and thread basics, you will learn three easy, hand sewn stitches – running stitch, backstitch and hemming. We will also teach you simple decorative stitching techniques.
Working with these stitches, you will learn how to create strong and neat French seams, and take up a hem. You will take home a small hand sewn soft case with optional ‘sashiko stich’ embellishment.
Learn to repair and embellish your worn winter woolies with durable darning. Save your clothes and reduce your impact on the environment!
Darning is a specific mending skill used to repair both knit and woven fabrics and is especially good for winter wear. We’ll teach you the basics, then show you how to create both visible, colourful darns and more discreet ones that blend in.
Skill level: This workshop is suitable for both absolute beginners and more experienced sewists who fancy a relaxing session of hand mending. You can make a sampler or mend your well-worn favourite clothes. We welcome and include men and non-binary folk!
We will provide: All sewing equipment, darning yarns, vintage darning mushrooms, sampling materials, handout notes and lots of guidance and encouragement!
