Beyond Basics Sewing Short Course 4 weeks
A four week (10 hour) short course ideal for budding sewists who can already confidently use a sewing machine to sew simple items. Gain the confidence and know-how to begin sewing your own wardrobe!  Choose your own ‘easy’ level pattern that you can complete over the 4 weeks.

This short course is focussed on  learning to use commercial sewing patterns to make simple garments. 
In the first week we will take you through the fundamentals of using sewing pattens and how to correctly cut out your pattern from your fabric.
In the following weeks you will construct your garment, following the steps detailed on the pattern instruction sheets. You will learn essential garment making techniques along the way.

Skill level: Suitable for students who can use a sewing machine to make simple items, and out of practice sewists who want to brush up their skills or learn more formally. Men are most welcome to attend!
You may have completed one of our Learn to Sew One Day Workshops , Beginner’s Courses or similar.   

We will provide: Sewing machines and all other equipment, beverages, handout notes and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would prefer to learn on that instead, and your sewing kit if you have one. A beginner’s level sewing pattern you can complete within the four weeks and fabric. Your teacher can advise you on pattern and fabric choices before the course commences.

Introduction to Sewing Clothes Short Course. A four-week course for students who can confidently use a sewing machine to make simple items, wanting to advance their garment construction skills.  

In the first week we will take you through the fundamentals of using sewing pattens. Firstly you will learn how to take your measurements and adjust your pattern to fit.  Then we will teach you the correct method of laying out your pattern pieces on your chosen fabric, cutting them out and transferring markings.

Over the following weeks you will construct your garment, following the steps detailed on the pattern instruction sheets. You will learn many essential garment making techniques along the way. We will make a simple relaxed-fit, tunic or shift dress of your choice (a list of patterns for you to choose from will be offered)

Skill level: This course is pitched at ‘beyond basics’ or ‘advanced beginners’ level students who want to learn more about making clothes using patterns. A minimum of 6 hours sewing experience using a machine and following simple patterns, is required to enroll in this course.

You will have completed simple projects such as a tote bag, zippered pouch or cushion cover in the past. If you do not have this level of skill or experience, you may wish to enroll in one of our Beginners courses or our full-day Learn to Sew Intensive. We offer both Short Learn to Sew courses (10 hrs) and Term-long Beginners courses

This is a great course for out of practice sewists who want to brush up their skills, or self taught ones who would like to start learning more formally. Open to adults and young adults (minimum age 15yo).  Men are most welcome to attend! 

We will provide: Sewing machines and all other equipment, beverages and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would prefer to learn on that instead, and your sewing kit if you have one. A sewing pattern for a shift/tunic dress or top. Suitable fabric, thread and other notions required to make your garment.  Your teacher can discuss fabric choices with you before the course commences.

Getting Here: We are located in the Hyde Business Park close to Yarraville Gardens. 6 minutes walk (550 metres) from Seddon Station or 10 mins walk from Footscray Station straight up Hyde St. The 409 bus that runs between Highpoint and Yarraville stops right outside. NB. Our studio is up a flight of 12 stairs. We can assist if you need help getting yourself or your machine up the stairs.
