Hand Sewing for Making & Mending- Saturday 11th May OR Sunday 30th June

$80.00

You don’t have to know how to use a sewing machine to make and repair textiles. After all, until the first Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century all clothing was sewn by hand. In this hand sewing and mending workshop you will learn the basic hand stitching techniques required to produce and mend garments and textiles.

We will cover the sewing techniques you need to start creating and mending your own clothes by hand. After some needle and thread basics, you will learn three easy, hand sewn stitches – running stitch, backstitch and hemming. We will also teach you simple decorative stitching techniques.

Working with these stitches, you will learn how to create strong and neat French seams, and take up a hem. You will take home a small hand sewn soft case with optional ‘sashiko stich’ embellishment.

Learning how to wrangle a needle and thread is a valuable life skill that can save you money, save your clothes and reduce your impact on the environment!

In this relaxing, slow-sewing workshop you will learn the hand sewing stitches and techniques you need to:
– make and finish garments and accessories by hand
– repair and alter your favourite clothes and textiles
– sew on buttons, take up hems, do decorative or less visible mending, make french seams., achieve a couture finish on your garments. Hand sewing technique requests welcome!

Skill level: This workshop is suitable for both absolute beginners and more experienced sewists who fancy a relaxing afternoon of social hand sewing. You can utilise the stitches you learn to either make a small pouch,  or to hand mend your well worn garments. We welcome and include men and non-binary folk!
