Hand Sewing for Making and Mending Sunday 14th November 10am – 1pm
You don’t have to know how to use a sewing machine to make and repair textiles. After all, until the first Industrial Revolution in the eighteenth century all clothing was sewn by hand. In this hand sewing and mending workshop you will learn the basic hand stitching techniques required to produce and mend garments and textiles.
We will cover the sewing techniques you need to start creating and mending your own clothes by hand. After some needle and thread basics, you will learn three easy, hand sewn stitches – running stitch, backstitch and hemming. We will also teach you simple decorative stitching techniques.
Working with these stitches, you will learn how to create strong and neat French seams, and take up a hem. You will take home a small hand sewn soft case with optional ‘sashiko stich’ embellishment.
In this relaxing slow sewing workshop you will learn the hand sewing stitches and techniques you need to:
-make simple garments and accessories by hand
-repair and alter your favourite clothes and textiles
– visibly mend your worn spots with creative sashiko stitching and patching Japanese style.
Learning how to wrangle a needle and thread is a valuable life skill that can save you money, save your clothes and reduce your impact on the environment!
This workshop is suitable for both absolute beginners and more experienced sewists who fancy a relaxing afternoon of social hand sewing. You can utilise the stitches you learn to either make a small pouch or soft case, or to hand mend your well worn garments. Men are most welcome to attend.
We will provide: All sewing equipment; upcycled, vintage fabrics to sew a simple pouch and handout notes.
Bring along: Any meaningful or vintage textiles you would like to upcycle into a pouch such as tea towels or table napkins (we will also have plenty on hand). Any garments that need mending or enhancing by hand. Your sewing kit if you have one you would prefer to use.
