Intro to Zero Waste Sewing – Make the ZW Cropped Shirt

Make the ZW Cropped Shirt by Birgitta Helmersson  Learn the fundamentals of using zero-waste sewing patterns to make garments, and master essential sewing techniques!

The ZW Cropped shirt is a boxy top with an extended shoulder, sleeve bands, a button front and interesting design elements, made from 1 metre of fabric. Swedish designer Birgitta Helmersson is a champion of zero waste and has a great zero waste sewing pattern range.
– Understand the principles of using zero waste sewing patterns to make garments using a pattern designed by
– Read and apply the information detailed in the sewing pattern to cut out your fabric following zero waste principles, and prepare for sewing.
– Construct  your cropped shirt following the pattern instructions, learning essential sewing techniques along the way. NB. Due to time constraints it may not be possible to fully complete your garment on the day.

Skill level: This workshop is pitched at ‘beyond basics’ level sewers. You must have confidence using a sewing machine to construct simple garments. If you are an absolute beginner we recommend you take our Sewing Machine Basics workshop on Sunday 27th March as a pre-requisite for attending this workshop.

We will provide: Sewing machines, overlockers and all other equipment.  Lots of zero and low waste resources!

Bring along:  Your pdf download of the ZW Cropped Shirt pattern. Your own sewing machine (we have plenty if prefer to use ours). A sewing kit and fabric scissors if you have them. Fabric (preferably recycled in the spirit of zw sewing) and matching thread. Your teacher will be in touch with more details about fabric recommendations, quantity and other required materials closer to the date of the workshop.
