Garment in a Day Sewing Intensive with Frankie & Ray Sunday 1st December 10am – 4.30pm
Sew the Calendar Dress and Shirt Pattern by local indie sewing pattern company Frankie & Ray! Pattern and lunch included.
To round off our 2019 workshop program, we are excited to offer this full-day workshop with special guest teacher Jo Dunsmuir! Jo is the designer behind the much-loved Frankie & Ray pattern range.
Perfect for the sunny, summer days ahead, the Calendar Dress & Shirt is a versatile and flattering design, and can be made in a number of different versions. Popular for its easy-to-wear style, this smock design has a slightly slimmed down silhouette with a skirt gathered to the front bodice and a plain back.
Make it with either a 3/4 length sleeve with a deep hem to roll up to just above elbow length, or sleeveless, as a dress or shirt. The sleeveless pinafore-style version can be worn over a top or tee, or alone as a cool summer garment. The dress has fully lined deep patch pockets. All styles have a bias finished neckline and a narrow hem. The Calendar Dress is sure to be an often worn addition to your wardrobe!
This Garment in a Day Sewing Intensive is a one-day workshop ideal for budding sewists who know the basics of using a sewing machine to make simple items, but have little or no experience using sewing patterns.
Under Jo’s expert guidance you will learn to:
- understand the principles of using commercial sewing patterns to make garments.
- read and apply the information detailed in the sewing pattern to find your size, lay and cut out your fabric, and prepare for sewing.
- construct and finish your garment following the pattern instructions, learning essential sewing techniques along the way.
- make patch pockets, attach sleeves ‘on the flat’ (for the version with sleeves), finish neckline (and armholes for the sleeveless version) with bias binding, gather and more!
Skill level: This workshop is pitched at ‘beyond basics’ level sewers. You must have confidence using a sewing machine to construct simple items (eg. a cushion cover, tote bag or basic clothing item) or to make simple alterations to existing garments.
Your teacher: Jo Dunsmuir is the one-woman show behind her pattern company Frankie & Ray. Along with creating clothing and quilting patterns, Jo is an amazing knitter, sews and sells a small range of clothing, and makes beautiful quilts. Jo also regularly teaches her patterns in workshops around the country.
We will provide: Sewing machines, overlockers and all other equipment. A copy of the Calendar Dress pattern for you to take home. A yummy vegan lunch, tea, coffee and bikkies.
Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would like to learn on that (we have plenty if you don’t own one). A sewing kit and fabric scissors if you have them. Fabric and matching thread. Your teacher will be in touch with more details about fabric recommendations, quantity and other required materials closer to the date of the workshop.
