Beyond Basics Sewing Courses Term One 7 weeks from Sat 5th February OR 8 weeks (20hrs) from Wed 9th February


Beyond Basics Sewing Courses for students who can confidently use a sewing machine to make accessories, craft projects and basic garments. Learn to use commercial sewing patterns to make wardrobe essentials, and develop sewing techniques specific to making garments.

PLEASE NOTE: All students are required to be fully vaccinated to attend this course. Class numbers will be limited to 6 to meet density requirements.
If your course booking is affected by a lockdown we will reschedule your affected classes and offer additional make-up classes. You may also request a credit or full refund for classes missed due to Covid 19 restrictions imposed by the Victorian Government.

Skill level: Suitable for students who have completed one of our short or term-long Beginners courses (or equivalent), out of practice sewists who want to brush up their skills, or self taught sewers who wish learn more formally. A minimum of 12 hours sewing  experience using a machine and following simple patterns, is required to enroll in this course.

You will have completed simple projects such as a tote bag, zippered pouch or cushion cover and will also have sewn at least one simple item of clothing such as a shift dress, box top, elastic waisted pants or t-shirt. If you do not have this level of skill or experience, you may wish to enroll in one of our Beginners courses. We offer both Short Learn to Sew courses (10 hrs) and Term-long Beginners courses. You will learn to sew many of the items listed above.

Men are encouraged to attend (suitable projects will be offered for you)! Open to adults and young adults (minimum age 15yo)

In this course we make one item of clothing from the following along with learning a range of skills that can be applied to other projects:
Unisex casual pants; Skirt with back zipper; Simple shirt or shirt dress; Top with set in sleeves; 
NB: The project will be determined after consultation with the student group in the first week.

You will learn to:
– Read sewing patterns inc. how to take measurements, choose your size and fabric, layout and cut
– understand step-by-step sewing pattern instructions for making clothes
– perform a range of essential sewing techniques specific to garment construction including:
how to Insert a zipper;  set in sleeves; finish edges with neck bindings and/or facings and bands (bias and/or stretch); attach a collar;, sew stretch fabrics; finish seams; make an elastic waistband,.

Choose your own sewing patterns, suited to your skill level, to make up under our expert guidance. Over the 7 week will learn many dressmaking techniques and become familiar with the language of sewing patterns. The skills you learn will give you the confidence to sew independently into the future. We suggest you start with one of the garment types listed above for the Wednesday class,  then discuss your ideas for subsequent projects with your teacher.

Where:  The Gaye Abandon School of Sewing and Upcycling, Level 1, 9/131 Hyde St, Footscray.

When:  Wednesday evenings 6.30 – 9pm from FEBRUARY 8TH (20 hours over 8 weeks)
Dates: February
9th, 16th, 23rd March 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th
Saturday afternoons 2 – 5pm from FEBRUARY 5TH (21 hours of tuition over seven weeks)
5th, 12th, 19th, 26th March 5th, 12th, 19th

We will provide: Sewing machines if required and all other equipment. A lovely bright, spacious studio to sew in. Beverages, snacks, handout notes, friendly people and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine and kit if you prefer. You will be required to purchase fabric and a pattern for most of the projects, along with matching threads and other notions required to finish your garments.

Getting here:  We are located in the Hyde Business Park, 131 Hyde St, Footscray, close to Yarraville Gardens.
Public Transport: We are 6 minutes walk (550 metres) from Seddon Station or 10 mins walk from Footscray Station straight up Hyde St.The 409 bus runs up Hyde St between Yarraville and Highpoint Shopping Centre (via Footscray) There are stops very close to us. There is street parking in Hyde St and customer parking behind the complex in Cowper St. See our Contact Page for a map.

NB. If you are booking more than 6 weeks in advance, payment can be made in two instalments via direct deposit with the balance due two weeks before the commencement of classes. If you would like to take this option, please choose Direct Deposit at checkout and  make payment of half the course fee ($270) when you book (enter order number and DEP in the description field)
