Introductory Beginner’s Sewing Courses for budding sewists. Learn to sew using a sewing machine and develop a range of sewing techniques for making clothes and accessories.

PLEASE NOTE: All students are required to be fully vaccinated to attend this course. Class numbers will be limited to 6 to meet density requirements.
If your course booking is affected by a lockdown we will reschedule your affected classes and offer additional make-up classes. You may also request a credit or full refund for classes missed due to Covid 19 restrictions imposed by the Victorian Government.

Skill level: Suitable for absolute beginner’s with little or no experience using a sewing machine. Open to adults and young adults (minimum age 15yo) Men are encouraged to attend! (suitable projects will be offered for you)

Course content*
Week One – Introduction and pillow case, mask or similar simple project

– Make friends with your sewing machine – learn about the parts and how they work, how to wind a bobbin and thread your machine.
– Become familiar with sewing terminology and the other equipment you will use.

Weeks Two & Four
Floor cushion or zippered pouch
You will learn to:
– insert a zip
– Make box corners
– Sew seams following seam guides

Weeks Five & Six – Wide Legged  pants (unisex)
Prepare, cut and sew a simple garment using a range of techniques.
You will learn:
– Sew and finish straight and curved seams following seam guides
– Install pockets
– Make an waistband casing (for elastic)
– Sew hems

You will learn:
– how to read a simple sewing patterns
– A range of essential sewing techniques for garment construction including attaching facings.
– Trimming, pressing and finishing for a professional look

*Please note: The class content may vary over the duration of the course depending on the preferences of the student group.

Where:  The Gaye Abandon School of Sewing and Upcycling, Level 1, 9/131 Hyde St, Footscray.

When:  Tuesday evenings 6.30 – 9pm from NOVEMBER 9TH (15 hours over 6 weeks)
Dates: November 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th December 5th & 14th
OR
Saturday mornings 10am – 1pm from NOVEMBER 6TH (18 hours of tuition over six weeks)
November 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th December 4th & 11th

We will provide: Sewing machines if required and all other equipment. A lovely bright, spacious studio to sew in. Fabric for the first two projects. Beverages, snacks, handout notes, friendly people and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine and kit if you prefer. You will be required to purchase fabric. We will advise you on quantity and type in the first week.

Getting here:  We are located in the Hyde Business Park, 131 Hyde St, Footscray, close to Yarraville Gardens.
Public Transport: We are 6 minutes walk (550 metres) from Seddon Station or 10 mins walk from Footscray Station straight up Hyde St.The 409 bus runs up Hyde St between Yarraville and Highpoint Shopping Centre (via Footscray) There are stops very close to us. There is street parking in Hyde St and customer parking behind the complex in Cowper St. See our Contact Page for a map.

Policies and Payment Options: Due to our small class numbers we have strict Refund and Cancellation Policies Be sure to familiarise yourself with them before booking to avoid disappointment.  By booking this course you are agreeing to these policies. NB: These policies will be waived if bookings must be changed or cancelled due to Covid related circumstances such as having to isolate, stay away due to illness or lockdowns).

You can choose to make payment via Paypal using a credit card / Paypal balance, or by Direct Deposit. You will find our bank details in your booking confirmation email. If you don’t receive an email upon booking please check your Junk folder. If you choose Direct Deposit as your payment method, you must make payment within 24 hours of booking to secure your place.

We will be in touch 14 days before your course starts with a reminder and more information.

NB. If you are booking more than 6 weeks in advance, payment can be made in two instalments via direct deposit with the balance due two weeks before the commencement of classes. If you would like to take this option, please choose Direct Deposit at checkout and make payment of half the course fee ($270) when you book (enter order number and DEP in the description field).
