Beginners Sewing Courses Term 4 from Tues October 16th (FULL!) OR Sat October 20th (1 SPOT LEFT!)


An introductory class for budding sewists wanting to learn how to use a sewing machine and other essential sewing techniques.
TUESDAY evenings from 16th October – 11th December OR
SATURDAY mornings from 20th October – 8th December

Over eight x 2 1/2 hour lessons you will gain the sewing skills to get you started making homewares, clothes and crafts. Each week you will build up your practice by making a fun and useful projects!

Week One – Introduction and cushion cover
– Make friends with your sewing machine – learn about the parts and how they work, how to wind a bobbin and thread your machine.
– Become familiar with sewing terminology and the other equipment you will use.
– Practice sewing straight lines using plain and zig zag stitch. Sew seams and make hems.

Weeks Two and Three – Reversible Tote Bag:
– Cut out a simple pattern
– Practice sewing curves
– Learn to make darts, attach interfacing and turn linings, trim and press
– Create a professional finish with top and edge stitching.

Week Four –  Zippered Pouch
– Insert a zipper
– Make box corners
– Insert a lining

Weeks Five, Six and Seven – Woven top and/or PJ Pants and/or Cross Back Apron
Intro to making garments
Prepare, cut and sew a simple garment using a range of techniques

Week Eight – Hand Sewing
 All the stitches you need to sew and finish your handmade projects.

Please note: The class content may vary over the 8 week course depending on the preferences of the student group.

We will provide: Sewing machines and all other equipment, fabric for the first project, beverages, handout notes and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would  like to learn on that and your sewing kit if you have one. Any remnant fabric you would like to use to make a tote bag and/or cushion. If you don’t have fabric, we have plenty on hand purchased at Savers!

Where: The Gaye Abandon Workroom, 122 Buckley St, Footscray.

When: Choose from a Tuesday evening or Saturday morning course each with a maximum of 6 students.
OPTION 1: Tuesday evenings 6.30 – 9pm
OCTOBER 16th, 23rd, 30th  NOVEMBER 13th, 20th, 27th.  DECEMBER 4th, 11th. NB. No class on Melbourne Cup Day 6th November.

OPTION 2: Saturday mornings 10am – 12.30pm
OCTOBER 20th, 27th  NOVEMBER 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th.  DECEMBER 1st, 8th

Beginners Sewing Courses 4 from Tuesday October 16th OR Saturday October 20th

Learn the essential stitches and sewing techniques you need to get started, in our Beginners Sewing Courses with 20hrs tuition over 8 weeks. You can practice on one of our classic Swiss made Berninas, and later model machines  or bring your own machine if you prefer. You will gain confidence in your stitching skills and learn new methods while working on a range of projects. Along with the basic machine skills you need to get you started as a sewist, your teacher will show you various hand stitches for finishing and fixing, pressing techniques and tips and tricks for using sewing patterns.

In this twenty hour course you will learn:

  • about the various parts of your sewing machine and how they work
  • to set up your sewing machine and prepare the threads ready to start sewing
  • to stitch straight lines and curves and adjust stitch types for various uses
  • to sew and finish seams and hems
  • what to do when things don’t go as planned
  • to make a three to four beginners projects (including a cushion cover, a tote bag and a simple top)

Sewing is a wonderful life skill to possess. Being able to mend, alter, or make your own clothes and homewares from scratch can save you money, reduce your impact on the environment and give you enormous pleasure and pride. You will find that you value and cherish the things you make for years to come. Gaining confidence in using a sewing machine and stitching by hand is the first step to realising any number of textile projects. From clothes making and crafting to incorporating sewn textiles into your creative practice knowing how to sew is an essential skill!
