Beginners Sewing Course Term 2

Term 1 has now commenced. Please contact us if you would like to register your interest for Term 2 courses (commencing late April). We will get in touch when bookings open.

An introductory class for budding sewists wanting to learn how to use a sewing machine and practice essential sewing techniques.

Term 1 has now commenced, however, due to a late cancellation we have one place available in our Saturday morning class. If you are interested in joining in, we will calculate your fee for the remaining classes in the term on a pro rata basis. Please contact us for more information or if you would like to register your interest for Term 2 courses (commencing late April)

Over eight x 2 1/2 hour lessons on a Tuesday evening or seven 3 hour lessons on a Saturday morning you will gain the sewing skills to get you started making homewares, clothes and crafts. Each week you will build on your practice by making fun and useful projects!

Week One – Introduction and cushion cover
– Make friends with your sewing machine – learn about the parts and how they work, how to wind a bobbin and thread your machine.
– Become familiar with sewing terminology and the other equipment you will use.
– Practice sewing straight lines using plain and zig zag stitch. Sew seams and make hems.

Weeks Two and Three – Reversible Tote Bag:
– Cut out a simple pattern
– Practice sewing curves
– Learn to make darts, attach interfacing and turn linings, trim and press
– Create a professional finish with top and edge stitching.

Week Four –  Zippered Pouch
– Insert a zipper
– Make box corners
– Insert a lining

Weeks Five, Six and Seven – Woven top and/or PJ Pants and/or Cross Back Apron
– Intro to making garments
– Prepare, cut and sew a simple garment using a range of techniques

Week Eight – Hand Sewing
 All the stitches you need to sew and finish your handmade projects.

Please note: The class content may vary over the duration of the course depending on the preferences of the student group.

We will provide: Sewing machines and all other equipment, fabric for the first project, beverages, handout notes and lots of very practical techniques!

Bring along: Your own sewing machine if you would  like to learn on that and your sewing kit if you have one. Any remnant fabric you would like to use to make a tote bag and/or cushion. If you don’t have fabric, we have plenty on hand purchased at Savers!

Where: The Gaye Abandon Workroom, 122 Buckley St, Footscray.

When: Choose from a Tuesday evening or Saturday morning course each with a maximum of 6 students.
