A Darn Good Time with Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald
Take a deep dive into the art of darning with mending expert Erin Lewis-Fitzgerald, author of the book Modern Mending.
Darning uses yarn or thread to magically weave new fabric in place of a hole, and strengthen threadbare clothing to make it last longer.
In this class you’ll learn a variety of methods for darning by hand, including weaving and blanket-stitch darning (e.g. honeycomb darning).
This class will focus on creative, visible mending – for maximum fun and ease of learning – but you’ll learn how to apply methods learned in this class to create invisible or blended mends, too.
Skill level
Beginner-intermediate. No mending experience is required, and the class can be made more challenging for experienced menders.
Tools and materials
Mending supplies will be available for purchase, or you are welcome to bring your own. Students will receive a list of recommended supplies upon booking.
What to bring
Socks, tea towels or fabric for darning practice. If you don’t have anything in need of mending (lucky you!) you can practise with fabric scraps from SOSU’s stash.
